2010 Suburban Bowhunting Adventures 10-2-2010

10-2-2010 3:30pm I am in the truck and on my way to the North side of LL property. I am using the Muddy CLimbing Harness, the Gamohunter Ambush Saddle Prototype, the muddy Ambush platform prototype and muddy climbing sticks.

After a 15 minute drive I am at my parking area, I walk in about 250 yards and find a nice 8" tree and start climbing with my climbing sticks. The great thing about this set-up is I don't have to climb down once I start up the tree.

I am completely settled into the tree about 4:45pm at 5:15pm I see movement northwest of me. There are three does in the bottom of the ditch aout 45 yards away. I put the tree between myself and the does. The does keep working their way up. Now I am about 30ft up as 7 muddy sticks easily get me up that high with little effort. One thing I need is a bag for these to keep them from hanging up on anything, I am thinking a soft compound bow bag modified might work.

Anyway, I wait for the first doe to work her way past me. As she comes around behind me I move around the tree. Another doe works her way up and I take aim she is about 25 yards away, I let the arrow fly, but she turns quickly and the arrow goes in far back but exits not where I would like it too. then the next doe comes around to the north of my position, I shoot her, and I hit the spine, I put another arrow into her.

Then a third doe comes up to the south of my position, I move around the tree and shoot an arrow, I hit an unseen sappling and the arrow explodes. I quickly reload and shoot he, but it hits high. She runs away and goes about 400 yards, I think she crashed but was not for sure.

I get down after a 1/2 hour and go and look at the two lumenok arrows and see that they are covered in green gunk, and hair not a good sign.

I looked for over 2 hours for either doe, and could only find a couple specs of blood. I will come back in the morning and try to get a better look.

I field dresss my doe and get her in the truck.

FFWD - Sunday morning, 3 hours of looking cannot find either one of the does, the cover is just too thick.

2010 Suburban Bowhunting Adventures 10-01-2010

4pm Oct 1st. I head to the North LLP stand and get setup. at 5pm I see my first deer, but could make it out in the brush. At 515)9I a small forkhorn work a scrape then I see about 20 turkeys at 530pm I see a larger 8 pointer work a scrape as well. What I have found is a primary scrape and will need to capitalize on it.

The hunt resulted in my missing one doe at 30 yards.

2010 suburban bowhunting adventures 9-26-2010

1030am I m laying in bed after not getting to bed until 345am I have been working on my custom ambush saddle I have created by utilizing a Petzl Canyoning Harness and a Muddy climbing harness the design concept is great. I like my tree saddle, but I wanted a design that was more compact and had the best of both worlds standard climbing harness and ambush saddle. This combo does it.

By using 7 Muddy Treesteps and my prototype MEGA AMBUSH STEP I can easily get to 30 feet in a 19lb package.

12pm I am settled in the tree of course there were deer in the field when I got there so I drove in anyway busting them up like a covey of quail ( not really they were just inside the timber)

At 2pm I see a squirrel (fox) getting a drink out of the creek. I am setup on the center of an S curve on Kettle Creek so that I am cverinf two separate crossings. I am 40 yards off one and 50 yards off the other.

At 245pm I see movement about 20 yards out and it is a ground hog. I decide to try my ambush saddle I had to actually make an adjustment and move around the tree from 6oclock position to about 11oclock position
I had to chane arrows to one of my small game stopper heads and was able to do this wonderfully.

Made the adjustment centered my pin and shot the whistle pig at 23 according to my rangefinder.

The arrow hit the pig with a loud thunp it made a groan and I believe its dead.

Suburban Bowhunting Adventures 9-22-2010

505pm 9-22-2010 I have just rushed to get dressed and I am going to need try and get in a hunt at the QPM property. I was going to setup in a stand I alread had setup, but there were already deer there, I usually drive right up to my stand at the mall that way I push the does or old them off a few yards for awhile. The two yearling does, spooked and went crashing into the trees, instead of setting up in the treestand I chose to head back up north part of the property as there is a brisk wind coming from the south east. I setup in a ground blind in the same spot I killed a double in 2008 I was right about 610pm two does hit my section of the field they are about 100 yards away but I am hoping they will work this way. Supposed to be a storm tonight I am hoping they will be on their summer feeding pattern. I can hunt tonight until about 754 CST. I am trying out my new Headband camera I imported drom an overseas manufacturer we will see how it works from a groundblind The wind is very srong, but we will try to make the best of it. Same day groundblind setups are kind of my specialty. Just have to be patient.

Well, 635pm and the bid bad doe who is really old and has triplets every year comes out a truck or something makes a huge screeching moise and she decides to go back in the timber that was a total of 5 deer I have seen at 200 yards away Don't know if she will come back out or spook down to the southside. This wind should die down soon...

Suburban Bowhunting Sept 18th 2010

I tried to hunt this morning... but the weather did not cooperate. so I am in a stand this afternoon tried out my new angle on the muddy sticks by strapping each stick to a stick be fore it and using a short length of rope tied to the first stick I was able to climb th e tree quietly without coming down for each stick.

I however think that the snap buckles are wrong for this application and I going to try velcro instead so the sticks are snug and so ther is no buckle to get caught.

I also have some muddy treestand parts for my new mega step for using my ambush sling.

stay tuned...

545pm just watched 3 does looks like its fixing to rain hard might be time to get down... I will wait it out for afew more minutes...

9-11-2010.

3:15pm I am getting ready to leave after running around town getting things together with my friend Michael Fontana, who is now a 1st year bowhunter. I decide to take him to my QPM property and give him a shot at least seeing a doe, if not trying to kill one. It has been great teaching Michael he literally came to me and I set him up by taking him to the local proshop, he thought that he was right hand shooter, but we did an eye dominance test on him, we found out that he is left eye dominant, so we got him set-up with a left-hand charge. He picked up a ½ dozen arrow, a truball release and a ½ dozen 100grain Muzzy 4 blade broad heads. He has been practicing with me for a couple of weeks prior to this. And now we are set out to try and get the first deer of the season. Mike like all of us who start out has the same limitation on funds as any working class bowhunter. So he purchased a 30.00 BIGDOG treestand from Menards and aa 70 set of climbing ladder.
Well we get to the tree and I get up the tree literally in about 5 minutes with my MUDDY climbing sticks which are the bomb. Then I hung my muddy stand in about 5 minutes. Then I began to hang his stand on the left of me. Well first of all the pull straps that came with the stand TERRIBLE, I could not for the life of me get the thing cinched to the tree. So I had to get a ratchet strap out of the truck and it still was a pain in the butt it took about 20 minutes just to hang his stand!!! He got a real lesson in “you get what you pay for” There was nothing wrong with the stand just the way it fastened to the tree. I lent him a tree saddle to use as a harness, because the harness that comes with these stands are more of a political statement than a safety tool.
Well we get settled into the Treestand about 4:25. And of course being a new hunter Michael is excited and since we have been friends for a long-time in a non-hunting capacity, we tend to talk (TOO MUCH) and about 5:15 Michael sees that there are three deer about 65 yards from us, Now I have my trusty PRIMOS buck decoy out about 39 yards from the stand (too close I will explain why later).. Anyway it’s the OLD DOE, the one I have talked about in my other stories from 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. She sneaks up on the decoy stays 40 yards away, she doesn’t snort, she stomps 3 times and then circles at a full run 25 yards west of the decoy and heads to the north side of the property, she was exactly 65 yards when I wanted to make a shot and she is so SMART!!! She didn’t’ see us, but she knew something was up. She also had triplets, so shooting her is a priority, this is the 4th year she has had triplets with her.
Anyway after that is over with, Michael of course wants to talk about what went on, then I see some deer coming up the creek, he says “deer” and I am trying to keep him from shooting through the brush, and he waits, but can’t stop talking. He is truly doing pretty good, but won’t stop talking, finally one of the little 9 month or yearling does comes out, I say “Don’t shoot, wait for the mother to step out I will shoot her and you shoot one of the fawns, its about 6:00pm at this time, he comes to full draw immediately, I haven’t even taken my bow of the hook. So he’s holding, holding, holding, I am saying, “don’t shoot) the big doe finally commits and steps out the trees at 26 yards and I release and nail her in a sharply quartering away shot, I know its good… (more on that later)
I tell Michael shoot the little one and he lets it get out to about 20 yards and he releases, I can tell immediately the shot was very low front, but I can’t make out if it was a fatal shot… After that we settle in, he is pretty excited, shaken, all of the above, he about falls out of the tree, he is so excited. He leans over and says, “What an adrenaline rush!!!, He then begins to ramble on and on about how he nailed the deer, I at this time cannot tell if he got a good shot or not, it looked really low and front, but not to disappoint him, I want to wait to see blood.
So at this time about 6:35 we have seen 7 deer total. I tell him, “we have until 7:55pm to hunt” so we settle in, of course he has a hard time being quiet, when I spot a loan fawn coming up the creek, I tell him get ready, then he says, “no there are more deer!!” he is so excited he can’t stop talking (its great to be with a newbie!!!) There is a doe directly under the stand, but no shot opportunity, he says “I have a 60lbs I can shoot through that brush!!” I say, “NO YOU CAN’T STOP TALKING” well he continues to talk… the doe is literally about 10 yards away, I also wanted to wait and see if she would commit to clearing the brush, she didn’t then she got nervous cause Michael is continuing to talk and try to give me a play by play of where the doe is every 3 steps she takes, Finally she gets east of us since the decoy is not moving, she starts stomping and getting pissed then Michael started talking again!!! (love a newbie) and she looks up, she looks right at us, and I whisper, “ stop talking stop moving” he was so nervous and excited, he couldn’t get that I was giving him the look of “SHUT UP AND STOP MOVING” LOL anyway, she looked up through the trees at us about 10 times then she decides that its time to go. And Blows all through the woods and so does the other one, scaring everything off.
It is now about 7:20pm and we have seen a total of 11 deer today. So I tell him we are going to climb down at 7:55pm and we are going to collect all of our gear and then look for his arrow (no lumenoks) and then go look for our deer.
I am positive my deer is down within in 40 yards of where I shot her. His deer had crashed through the creek, but it was running so fast, I do believe he might of hit it in the foot, but at that time I didn’t want to tell him…
Well we get down out of the tree with a few minor problems… Michael having never descended a Treestand at night, it took a little, but we got down there with minor incidents.
While I was taking my stand down and my steps, Michael went to look for his arrow, he found it, I tell him “stick it in the ground right where you found it” he’s like “why do that, so I am trying to remove Treestand etc. he calls his wife and tells her “we got two” now of course, I wouldn’t of done that, because in bowhunting, you don’t “have em” unless they are in the back of the truck on the way to the processor.
Anyway, I get the MUDDY stands and sticks down. We get our gear packed up and then I go to look at his arrow, now told me, “I have blood everywhere” well, when I finally get to look at his arrow, not much blood, he had WIPED his arrow off with his gloves, but there was not blood trail. Which was my suspicion that he hit the front leg.
We go to my Lumenok’d arrow and there is blood all over the ground behind and in front of it. I walk to where the doe walked in, and there is blood… we cross the crick walk about 10 yards and I look 20 yards to the west and say “there she is” she’s dead, so then we drag her out to the trail. Then we try and find Michaels deer, we look for about an hour, but I cannot pick up a blood trail anywhere. I tell him, we will come back in the morning its going to get 45 tonight, so I took him through the whole process of field dressing, then putting on a tag, calling in the tag and then taking the deer to the fire station to be checked in and then taking the deer to the meat locker. After that we are back home and he is on his way. He comes down on Sunday 9-12-2010 we looked for his doe from 8:30am till about 10:30am and could not find it or any sign of any blood.
So I had to break the news to my friend… you had a bad shot man. He was disappointed to say the least, but I told him, Same thing happened to me at this very spot 2006 season and I shot mine at 10 yards, he started describing his shot, and I know what I think he did wrong, he did not bend at the waist and keep his “T” formation he also might of jerked a little to the right.
Anyway, we get back to my house and separate our gear from the night before and he says “ I still had a great hunt and it was successful in my opinion” I tell him, “anytime you can bowhunt it is successful because its American freedoms being enjoyed” anyway, I tell him I am not sure if I can hunt this afternoon or if I even want to. I have some gear things I need to take care of (my pack weighs about 35 lbs.) and I need to put together the Modular style pack I was carrying before.
PS sorry about the crappy picture, but it was 11pm and we had the brights on the truck on.

2010 Suburban Bowhunting Adventures 09-11-2010

1ST Day os season is dinally HERE as the alrm goes off at 430am I get up with eager anticipation of the morning to come. I hope to connect sometime today with a doe. I a completely out of venison and it is a major part of our diet.

As I leave house I grab my bow which is in a pole mountain bowshield and my pack. Just out of curiosity I put my pack on the scale 40lbs. Geesh, but between video and essential gear it is what it is.

Well this morning I am hunting my standby that has produced the 1st day of season every year. LLSWP stand. It is the same stand I took two does opening day last year out of.

Getting into the stand was uneventful. I don't thinl I spooked any deer walking in. I hope to at least see some deer.

724am no deer, ample gray squirrels and I can hear turkes down in the brush we will see what happens next...

DIY Predator E-Caller Gamohunter Designs

Here is an E-Caller that I built for my predator hunting Times. Now this is not cheaper than buying a Spitfire, but you have a longer range, your sounds are with YOU , you don't have to program a remote, you are not limited to 24 sounds displayed/played at a time and you have the ability to upgrade to a better MP3 player that can hold 8-16 gigs of sequences. I don't even use single sounds just sequences. I have experimented with several types of enclosures etc. and this one is by far the sturdiest and the best deal. for $20.00 you get your battery, charger, housing already hooked up to a switch. Use the reflector as a way to hold the speaker and shield the antenna from the magnet on the speaker. It screws to gether zero hot glue necessary. Only thing left is to build a voltage regulator fixed for 9volts and hook it up. You will have to remove all of the circuit boards from your Nady 151 receiver and it will barely fit, you will have to remove the wall charger from the rear and move the battery all the way to the rear and velcro it into place so it won't move. If you are not electronically inclined I will try to explain how to built it. IN all reality if I could hook up with the components for this wholesale this could probably be built for under $100.00. It took me literally 1 hour to assemble it. Sorry for the blurry pictures, but this is just video and picture from my cellphone. Anyway. I hope you can build this it takes little time and can be done completely in about an hour. The only power tool think I had to do was drill a hole for the antenna, but I am going to mount a permanent antenna on this. I believe that experimentation is great. It is not for those trying to save a buck, this was more than a labor of love, I spent probably about 60.00 more on other parts that I am not using now for this caller, extra batteries etc. But I think I can use those parts for my portable e-decoy. I do believe that I will change out the 193 for a 30watt stereo amplifier so I can have a jack for an auxillary speaker that I can use. One thing you have to know is that the Nady151 is awesome because it gives the proper line-leve input to the amp. Where a direct wire seems to clip the input to amp. I think this is one of the best callers I have built, ane even though I have a bunch of western digital callers laying around, I won't be using them for anything other than backups now, this is louder and clear than the SPC5 horn as well. Plus for those of you who can legally use an e-caller in deer country you will get an awesome rattling horn sound because of the two-way speaker.

Off-Season

Well I finished my season January 26th, 2009 with no big surpries. I am now now full-swing into the predator season, putting down my bow and going for my largebor air-rifle. .45 Caliber Sam Yang. it is a monster and the best gun ever. I have been building electronic calls during my time off and I have rebuilt two Western-Rivers Predation Callers I had and I am building a third caller from scratch. I have to sight my rifle in tomorrow and then possibly go coyote hunting the next day. I hope the cold weather holds so that maybe a few of these coyotes will have a strong pelt.

here is a picture of the call I repaired.

Here is a picture of my SY909BB44 Air Rifle which is a .45 Caliber Pre-Charged Pneumatic Air Rifle.

2009 Suburban Bowhunting Adventures

January 1st 2010 330pm: I go to leisure living and attempt to get my does killed. As I drive in I see three does eating out of a bird feeder. Now I know they are hitting the feeders. I thought I would hunt out of a ground blind. But changed my mind and got into a treestand. I saw three does about 100yards I got out of the tree at sundown and those does were in the brush pile when I walked out. Hunting this season has been tough.
